Just try to be “present” when you start to itch. Don’t just let the feeling take hold. Ground yourself, realize what’s happening and actively say “No. Not now. Not today.” Maybe you won’t always be able to get the steering wheel back but every time you do it’ll be easier than the last time.

I’m glad to hear you made steps in the right direction. Write yourself a note today. To the last sober version of yourself you remember, like you have a time machine. Tell him what to watch out for. What triggers you into bad behavior. Explain what it feels like the moment it’s over. Now that you have that written down reread it often. Maybe during each itch. Writing yourself letters from moments of sobriety is a great way to pull yourself out of moments of backsliding.
