To this day, a relevant cartoon.

Islam allows war in self-defence (Qur'an 22:39), to defend Islam (rather than to spread it), to protect those who have been removed from their homes by force because they are Muslims (Qur'an 22:40), and to protect the innocent who are being oppressed (Qur'an 4:75). Some Muslims felt that the artists were directly attacking Islam, and so defended their religion with violence, as is permitted in the Quaran. But many Muslims would say idea of conflict is completely unIslamic, however the issue lies in the vagueness of the scriptures, leading to misinterpretation. Fight in the cause of God against those who fight you, but do not transgress limits. God does not love transgressors. Qur'an 2:190 Islam is in favour of peace and against violence. Murdering the innocent leads to punishment in Hell: If anyone killed a person - unless it was for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he killed the whole people Qur'an 5:32 Take that last verse for example "for spreading mischief in the land" - that is a dangerously vague term, as 'mischief' could mean many things, and does not go into detail as to what severity of 'mischief' is required to denote the use of killing. In short, the problem with Islam is not with its core messages (which is to genuinely spread peace), but the issue lies in its admittance to be violent is certain circumstances, and this issue is made worse by the extremely vague description of want constitutes being violent. All acts of Islamic terrorism are made due to such people believing they are defending Islam, as permitted in the Quran. If we are ever to stop Islamic related terrorism, we must make it extremely clear as to when the use of violence, if at all, may be used. Muslims must accept that due to the Quran's vague allowance of violence, the book is dangerously flawed, and we must all try to fix that.
