A Day Removed: My Thoughts On The Heyward Situation (with the benefit of a cool-down period)

I don't really blame Mo for losing Heyward. I don't think we could match what the Cubs were offering. Heyward gets 2 opt outs, so as long as he doesn't tank, he has the opportunity sign another long term big money deal in the future where he can make even more. He basically is getting paid really well to test drive the team and city for a few years and has alot of control over his future. Plus, if he signed here, he comes to a team that with a storied past of winning and could be a part of that. But if he wins a ring with the Cubs and is a big contributor as to why they won, he is going to be a fucking legend in that town/fanbase and beyond, so the multiple opt outs and the legacy were probably the ultimate deciders. But for the Cubs, they also have a stacked outfield currently with even great OF bench depth, but also have 3 potential stars coming up from the minors for them in Martinez, McKinney, and Almora. The way this contract is structured, if he does great for a few years and leaves, they still took the biggest division rivals best player and bought themselves some time to get one of their prospects big league ready and those guys will be under control for years on the cheap. I think the only way this contract comes back to bite them in the ass is if Heyward is injured more than he is not and they are stuck with a player who isn't contributing for several years. The way Heyward plays so aggressive, and the history of injuries with outfielders as tall as he is, coupled with the fact now he is going to be dealing with brick fucking walls and bullpens in foul territories if he plays any of the corner positions, that is actually a reasonable possibility. I think we will see a big move or 2 from Mo really soon though. I am sure he was waiting and hoping for the Heyward thing to work out, but since it didn't he knows he can't sit back and wait too much longer and watch any more targets get scooped up without making a real play on them. Hoping we don't give up too much in terms of talent, but for free agents, we have the money to spend a little more than we are used to, so time to take all of that tv, beer, and BPV money and put it to use. There are too many good teams in the National League now, just being good doesn't automatically get you a playoff spot anymore.
