Daycare fee sticker shock linked to minimum wage hike | Toronto Star

How much you get paid has nothing to do with how hard you work

I mean, it sort of does...if I'm being paid minimum wage, that's the company's way of telling me that they'd pay me even less than garbage if it weren't for those pesky laws. So I don't care about them, I do the bare minimum, and I go home to my sad apartment in a shitty area, hungry to have tuna helper and water for the umpteenth night in a row.

On the other hand, when they pay you more (even if they don't have to), you feel valued. You come in on days off to help for free because you want to see your workplace do well. You're better fed, better clothed, better rested, and more comfortable in your home, which translates to a happier you, which translates to a happier worker, which makes you a better worker. This is even more true if you're provided benefits, a consistent schedule, and actual time off.

No job that requires a degree should even be allowed to pay minimum wage, especially not an ECE position. You're basically a teacher, with lesson plans and personally-bought items for your "classroom". Imagine scraping by on minimum wage. Now imagine you have a degree, are still being paid that garbage wage, and you're constantly expected to pay out-of-pocket for supplies. Fuck that noise.
