De-extinction: scientists are planning the multimillion-dollar resurrection of the Tasmanian tiger

Okay let's assume they succeed in the first part of actually genetically engineering this thing and raising it to adulthood.

What we'll end up with is a man-made animal that looks vaguely like a Tasmanian tiger in much the same way that a husky looks vaguely like a wolf.

There will be ethical problems with just releasing something into the wild without knowing exactly how it will interact with the ecology there. It could just as easily become an invasive species as it is to go extinct... "again".

Moving the science forward is the only reason to fiddle about with this. The technology of gene editing and engineering can literally save lives, and if excuses like this push it forwards, go for it. Just as long as we aren't using it for evil.
