Debate: What should be the end goal of a social democrat state?

I'll start of the discussion with the roughly outlined opinion of my own.

First of all, I'd describe myself as an ecologist liberal social democrat. I believe society ought to guarantee the liberties of each individual, but also that society ought to organize itself and that each individual should cooperate with the programs set up by the government. The government's goal should be to ensure improve the general freedom, equality and opportunities for each person. I also believe society should do all it can to be enviromentally friendly.

I loved Marx' "Communist Manifesto" but I have never been able to help to think that his solutions aren't what'd work for us. His writings are hundreds of years old, which on one side is amazing, since his critiques still apply very much, but also a reason to read it with a grain of salt, as our society changed.

I realise however that Marx himself said that certain nations have the ability to go to the democratic and steady evolution to a socialist state. But I cannot move myself to believe the majority of the people of a nation will agree to a classless society without private property, since greed is a very basic flaw of people that is easily exploited.

I am disgusted by the practices of capitalism and I believe capitalism is one of the major reasons our politics is so corrupt - lobbyists etc. I think capitalism should definitely be cut short, or even abolished, but I don't know what exactly would be an alternative. I know the idea that everyone owns everything is beautiful, but I don't think it is viable since economy is one of the basics of a society.

My socialism is mostly aimed to obtain the greatest possible equality - and I'd love to know what others think is the greatest equality possible, where is the limit?
