¿debería visitar a Venezuela ahorita?

Here is what I would tell you, in English. I am venezuelan, but moved to Texas in 1989. My husband and I travel extensively and I have been wanting to show him Venezuela for a very long time. Here are the reasons why I don't go:

  • Venezuela is VERY dangerous. The numbers don't lie. If you look like gringos or even have a foreign passport, you can bet the odds are ever against you. Do not risk your life and little money for a trip that you can easily make once the situation has calmed down.

  • You are correct, now is a very difficult time. As a tourist, showing off that you can go to a country to spend money that the population won't see a dime off of is a very insensitive thing to do. There is no delicate way to travel there because Venezuelans are very proud and they will have no qualms in taking something for themselves.

  • You aren't guaranteed that exchange rate. Everyone there is for themselves and will help no one if it doesn't benefit them in some way, which often means you'll end up losing, a lot.

  • See #1 above.

Trust me, there is no reason to unnecessarily risk your life in that way, when every other thread on this subreddit is about some fulanito de tal wanting to leave the country and these are honest people leaving the country knowing there is nothing there for them, which leaves the thugs, military and the like and that is not a good situation for tourist because you won't have any recourse. I doubt there is even a Canadian Embassy in Caracas.

That's one of the places you should really go and ask if it safe to travel to Venezuela, your own government agency.

Seriously, don't be dumb, wait for things to show improvement. I know it can happen I saw it in Colombia. Given time, it will happen in Venezuela too.
