"December Higher Power" Preview

I'm just gonna go point by point here, because this is very frustrating from my perspective.

I feel ridiculous even pointing this out, but no, Deron didn't single-handedly write the songs. CKY was a band. All of its members contributed. As Southernstylegravy noted earlier, Chad is not only a member of the band, but also the producer, and it seems a lot of detractors seem to not understand the producer's role, especially as it pertains to CKY. He didn't just throw sound effects on top of completed songs (which frighteningly seems to be a real thing some fans believe). Producer, engineer, and mixer are traditionally all separate, distinct jobs in the studio, Chad just happens to fill all three roles in CKY. Chad worked out song structures, wrote choruses, melodies, harmonies, bridges. He wrote songs. He wrote songs WITH Deron. The reality is that by-and-large, Deron wrote riffs, which he then brought to the band to turn into songs. Carver City, which Deron still seemingly considers the band's masterpiece, was the result of a total 50/50 collaboration between he and Chad, which Deron himself publicly noted several times in that era, contrary to the revisionist narrative he spins today.

Rock N Roll Alibis didn't "need" Deron any more than the Foreign Objects record would have needed Chad. It wasn't a CKY record, and it wasn't intended to be. It was a solo album. How would a collaboration with ANYONE have benefited the record? That would be the opposite of the point of that record.

The drums on Carver City were NOT programmed. That is Jess playing on the record. The album featured drum samples, which is the current trend in popular music (as it was when the album was recorded), and that was something that the label pushed for. Sampling is entirely for audio aesthetic. Deron's recent output features programmed drums. Carver City does not. As for Jess' chops, I'd argue that he's currently doing some next level shit. But you'll hear that soon enough.

While I haven't personally contributed to the pile-on that tends to go on in this sub, and I can't speak for the other folks here, I believe the commonly repeated opinion of Deron not being "capable" of writing CKY-style songs without his former bandmates is based both in his apparent reliance on old demos (as ScoopyJ noted, two of the three songs he's previewed thus far have been years-old demos) and his recent tendency to seek songwriting assistance from third parties. The Foreign Objects record featured songs written by Jon Masi, and aside from the aforementioned three demos, he's apparently using songs written by his new "Mecha" bandmates for his new record, despite that directly contradicting his previous claims that only he is capable of writing CKY songs. Though the list of individuals he has noted as being required for CKY to be CKY has changed several times over the years, depending on who is in his good graces at that particular moment. Humorously, apparently even several of the fans on his band's Facebook can't tell the difference without it being pointed out to them.
