The decency of amerikkkan soldiers

As much as I condemn the act of animal cruelty depicted in this video I don't think I could refer to this person as "evil". Many working class people are forced to work in environments such as slaughterhouses where they are desensitised to violence, my father being one such example. Fortunately, he was able to find work elsewhere later in life and incidentally, is a committed vegan and animal rights activist now.

I know that for me personally I could never sign up to an organisation like the US army or work in a slaughterhouse, but we don't know the factors which led to this individual making that decision and becoming desensitised to suffering to such an extreme degree. Perhaps they felt it was their only option, or grew up in an environment where cruelty was the norm rather than the exception. I could be totally wrong of course, but I know that people were quick to judge my father in the past and that those judgements did not describe the person he was then, nor the person he has become today.

We should obviously oppose needless cruelty wherever it rears its ugly head, but I also think we should be mindful of labelling our fellow man in black and white terms. In my experience, people are rarely "evil" by default.
