In defense of lewronggeneration

To imply that this generation needs to find something of their own is asinine, because this generation isn't one big clump of people who want the same thing.

Never meant to imply as such. Obviously, not "everyone" listened to grunge when it was a thing, nor was everyone a hippie or a flower-child when that was a thing. But segments rise and create trends that more or less, tend to define a generation as one of the things/movements/trends going on within the culture of that age group.

I feel like you're criticizing what's an obvious short-hand generalization for not being all inclusive. Obviously i don't mean everyone.

Firstly, all music is derivitive (barring possibly The Shaggy lol

Some more than others.

Judas Preist was derivative of Black Sabbath, but it was new enough to be it's own thing.

Now you have bands like Electric Citizen which was so derivative that they give nothing new. Whether we're talking Black Keys, or Lana Del Rey, or the doom-metal revival, or /r/outrun or even pop hits from the likes of Bruno Mars or Megan Trainor, it's not like these people are borrowing elements and making something new.

I don't mean to pose that something is or isn't derivative. But I would propose that how derivative you are can be placed on a gradient, and right now MOST bands/djs and so forth are biting off the past so hard it feels like little more than a regurgitation.

Additionally, your arument that pc culter and social justice is inhibiting and limiting music is, imo, a gross exaggeration. The vast majority of "extreme pc" or social justice examples I've seen were by in large either trolls or teenagers who are newly empowered and thus prone to outbursts. The outrage surrounding this topic is fueled by that very outrage, making a small problem look much larger than it actually is.

We're going to have to agree to disagree here. I've been called a racist for 10+ years for not attending the church of Kanye or Weezy, i've heard too many arguments that rock-ism is inherently sexist and racist for me to back down off this position.
