My boyfriend is a social worker. I posted another comment about this but social workers are not comfortable with responding to mentally ill people in psychosis without a police officer going with them as well. Most social workers are women who already have issues working with certain clientele. Like when my boyfriend worked with abused/neglected children in a facility he worked with the children older than 12 since they were bigger and more dangerous to female social workers. They will totally agree that most police killings are of the mentally ill and could be prevented, but the Columbus police department is teamed with netcare and a social worker will accompany the officer. This poses an additional expense to contract netcare. When the defund the police movement started his first thought was that they will cut mental health contracts (which they honestly will be doing anyways as they try to budget for the post covid economy).
