What did you get in the end?

I have been doing a lot (hell of a lot) of research into this and have come to the following conclusions based on commentary in game forums (il2, dcs mainly) of people who have experience with all the options (Trackir, Delanclip, Trackhat, knockoff Chinese Trackir versions)

Trackir 5 is the best camera option - the purpose built tracking ir camera is simply better than the modded ps3 one. It more accurate and responsive.

Trackir 5 software is the best software. People seem to have less problems with it, it is more responsive (as it has to be being a commercial product rather than the competing free software).

The free software works but seems to take significantly more work to get it setup. Users seem to report more problems with it though.

The best clip options though seem to be Delanclip Fusion and & Trackhat Plus. The Delanclip may be better - it appears to be metal whilst the Trackhat is 3d printed plastic. The Trackir 5 Clip Pro is universally reported as being fragile in the extreme.

So, in conclusion.

All options work. Trackir 5 works better and is more reliable, but not by so much that it may be an issue for you. If you don't mind spending time setting up, trouble
