Demand for rental homes in UK up by 23% in a year, as rents hit record high | Renting property

I wonder if anyone could help me? I had a well paid job until 2020 when Covid did a number on me and I tried to kill myself during a psychotic episode. I live in a rented house paying 950 but the benefit cap is 650 so I'm 300 quid in the hole every month. I get UC but the council have a lower threshold to savings so no help from them. I've been bidding on council properties for two years but as I'm not in the street I am 40th on a list of 200 plus every week and for every property. There is at least an 8 month wait to be seen by adult social services but I'm on the list.

I wrote to my MP and he told me that the housing situation is so bad I should not wait for a council house but find somewhere privately. Private rents are still much more than 650 a month and noone is going to want a tenant with no job when they can take their pick. Have I just got to suck it up until I'm in the gutter with my kids? Advocacy services have told me there is nothing they can do. I'm at a loss and any help/ advice would be much appreciated,
