Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren: 'I am a capitalist' – but markets need to work for more than just the rich

And I'm currently working on a PhD (not that it matters—education alone doesn't answer a difficult question). The point is that there are several legitimate criticisms (given by Marxists and others) that attempt to show exactly why we can't simply tweak capitalism to avoid its shortcomings. So in order to make the claim you're making, you would at least have to acknowledge and respond to those criticisms, not just ignore them. Also, I don't know what you mean by "best"--"best" with respect to economy could mean any number of things, including productive power, general well-being, happiness, equality, political representation, justice, and so on. (Even Marx thought capitalism was the best when it comes to pure productive power.) But one can't just ignore the various other ways in which the system has deleterious effects (which I won't list here), because capitalism is the "best" or whatever. Feudalism was probably the "best" in its time as well. The claim that at some point around the Industrial Revolution we discovered the best economic system of all time (with only the need for a few minor tweaks) is about as silly as peasants thinking that monarchy is good as long as you have a good ruler.
