The fact that eventually it was released, or that the fake investigations in exchange for the release of the aid doesn't change the fact that he committed a crime in attempting to make that exchange. If you try to rob a bank but fail, you still go to jail.

Trump didn't want an investigation, he wanted Zelensky to announce publicly that there would be investigations. Zelensky was about to do so on CNN, until the whistleblower's alarm reached Congress.

Trump was literally caught in the process of committing this crime, which forced him to stop in the middle of doing it.
