Dentistry in Canberra for the broke

I'm 29 y.o. and on Monday I went to the dentist for the first time in more than 7 years. The dentist was shocked that I had waited so long in-between visits and warned me that I'm "extremely lucky" my teeth are in good condition, and that I need to start going every 6 months from now on. But I think that's total BS. If you look after your teeth and practice good dental hygiene, you shouldn't need biannual checkups. (Albeit you should probably go more than once every 7 years...)

For any minor procedures like fillings I recommend that you try to find a University with a dental school as they usually have clinics where the students can perform minor dental procedures on members of the public, for free. You may have to travel outside of Canberra if there's no dental schools here, and they probably won't be able to help you with major procedures like root canals, but it'd still be worth it if you can save yourself the cost of any minor work that needs to be done.
