Depression and how to beat it ?

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD), also known as seasonal depression is pretty common. The decrease in sunlight, and often overcast weather during the winter can cause the blues.

In most people, it can be manageable by socialization, engaging in hobbies, and getting exercise. In some others, it's less easily managed.

There are phototherapy light boxes that work for many with more severe SAD. It's a special type of UV light you can buy online. You expose yourself to for a few minutes a day, everyday, and it tricks your brain into thinking the sun is out, and so produces happy chemicals like dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin, and helps to offset melatonin (the sleepy hormone) to increase energy levels.

However, there are some individuals still who are prescribed antidepressants through the winter months to treat SAD. These cases are pretty rare, but if you think you might benefit from it, you should talk to a psychiatric or medical professional about whether it's the right treatment for you.
