Dermatologists of reddit, what are some things people often overlook about their skin?

Same with me and my younger sister - except we’re both blonde. She moved to Florida and tans. I live further north and...just don’t.

She was complaining about how she has melasma on her upper lip - asked me if I got it and how I got rid of it because my skin is so even(ly pale). I was like - stop tanning, it’s the sun that darkens those spots. ‘No, like a cream or something’ - well, yeah I have vitamin c serum that’ll help fade it but you need to stop tanning and going in the sun without sunscreen or they don’t work!

It’ll prob take another decade (we’re straddling the 30 year mark) but her ‘I don’t go to tanning beds, I just live in Florida and don’t wear sunscreen when I’m at the pool 3x a week, that’s not tanning!’ is gonna catch up to her. I TRIED MAN.
