In the future to help others avoid having a similar experience to yours, I would recommend 1) Taking a look at previous work by the artist to make sure that it meets your standards before working with them. 2) Break the project into milestones to ensure that the artist is taking your project in the direction you had in mind and if the artist is unable to create what you are looking for you can leave the project with minimal loss. 3) Take extra time in the planning process to ensure that your designer understands your desired outcome. Having a document that outlines all of the agreed upon details helps to avoid confusion. 4) While great design does help sales and ROI, design alone won't generate sales. The internet is saturated with amazing work and the generation of income comes from the ability to connect products with the people who are ready for them.
