To Deskill or Not to Deskill

Times of social upheaveal shift what and who are outside and what aesthetics are outside (and of course the inverse at the same time, that being the inside and insider). It's not just a shift of what and who are outside/inside, but also how that outside/inside is decided, seen, contested, etc. The relevance of outsider art is then how it plays or fails to play with this time of social upheaval. For example, will it be used to shift an outside to an inside, such as through newly found institutional acceptance? Or maybe that isn't even the goal in the first place, maybe a different political strategy is being taken.

At the same time, identifying a time of societal upheaval is remarkably difficult, even in retrospect. It may not be clear, looking back, that this was the moment of upheaval—maybe this was just a time of where a technology was overhyped and we got caught up in it, or this moment of failing to meaningfully address climate change, a moment that once appeared to be never-ending, was just the waiting before a major social and political shift. To me all art, and maybe especially outside art, is relevant in how it shapes our relationship to the present moment.
