We started with the alphabet, but learning how to say words and learning how to properly form the sentences was more important that learning how to write everything. There was a very successful dude on YouTube who actually just recently died, who knew how to have conversations in many different languages by just learning how to speak it, and learning what the words sounded like and then putting himself into situations to use the words and talk to people who knew the languages (Laoshu50500 R.I.P).

Everyone is different so some people may learn it better by learning to write the language first, other may learn better by speaking it more than they are writing it. Either way, Hachu is almost certainly playing it up for the viewers here.
