Devolver Digital founder says 'shameful' developer workload is industry's 'dirty, dirty secret'

I studied game development at university to degree level. Throughout my time there, we had repeated guest speakers from the industry who basically told us this stuff over and over. From basically day one in university, we were told "You need to live games! You need to live and breathe the industry!"

Yeah, no. I'll do my job to the best of my ability. I'll go above and beyond when I need to. But fuck you if you think you can build in crunch time into my job. I have other interests, I have family, and I value them a hell of a lot more than I value finishing a game.

Honestly, the attitude in the industry seems to be that if you have any outside interests, you're not "committed" enough.

I'm glad I got out of it before I dedicated more of my life to it than I already had to be honest.
