Why does he deserve it?Because he is not the smartest guy? Is it because he is in-between jobs and collecting the unemployment he "paid for", when he had a job? Rick is still mad about Jerry knocking up Beth in high school as he has said a few times. Rick left the family for years and Jerry took care of Beth while Rick was gone. Jerry is nice enough to let his father in-law live in his house, he only complains about it when Rick is mean to him.

Maybe Jerry was abused by parents or bullies as a child and that's why he is so timid. Maybe he is just too nice of a guy.

Jerry is not the dumb loser everyone thinks he is. He has a college degree in civics, so he does have some education. He figured out how to save Beth's life in marriage counseling and he saved Beth again from the cronenbergs. He is always trying to connect with his kids. He weed-eats and tends to the house sometimes. Jerry is an underdog character who will probably never be the main character but he definitely has moments where he is a hero.
