Did a Particular Person Get You Started in Gaming?

My Dad is definitely responsible for me being into gaming. His gaming obsession was chess in high school, and then when he got out into the real world he ended up being a programmer, and liked computer chess (Sargon, I think was the one he played a lot).

I'm not sure how it happened exactly, but I have a memory of me being really young (maybe 5 or 6), and Dad took me with him to get a pizza at the local joint. They had arcade cabinets there, and one of them was Super Pac Man. I remember standing there staring at it like it was the most amazing thing I had ever seen. Not sure if it was the same trip, but I also have memories of him holding me up so I could play.

From there, I got an Atari 2600 for christmas one year, with Pac Man! It wasn't as great as the arcade, but I loved it anyway. I had probably at least 20-30 atari games for both that and the 7800 (many from yard sales and flea markets)... and I actually liked and could beat E.T. on the 2600... as a 10 year old (lol).

Because Dad was a programmer, we had a monochrome PC, and so I had text games like Zork, various relatively unknown things like Gym Adventure, Kingdom of Kroz, probably one of my favorite text games of all time -- Braminar. I swear, my love of roguelikes stems from this game, and is probably one of my favorite genres still.

After my brother was born, things shifted a little, and my parents started buying him the game systems. I remember feeling a little disappointed in that, but he and I were good about sharing, so as I got older, I would put my allowance into buying NES and Super NES games for both of us... and then my earned money when I got a part time job at 16.

I was totally obsessed with Final Fantasy I, Final Fantasy IV (II US) and Final Fantasy VI (III US). So many great games from the NES and Super NES era. One of my weirder ones was probably Friday the 13th on NES, loved playing it and could beat it when the stars aligned properly!

Once I had a job, I bought myself a PS1, and I've pretty much been keeping my gaming habit going since then. FF7 was one of my favorites then... so looking forward to the FF7 Remake!

I currently have a huge steam library, a PSP, a PS3, and a PS4... no sign of stopping any time soon.
