Didn't cast enough stitches on to make the circumference of a ribbed beanie. Need help making it wider.

Someone else might have a better (more experienced) answer than me, but I'm going to take a stab at it based on what I would do. You could pick up stitches along the length of what you have now, but then all your new stitches and knitting would be running perpendicular to your original piece. It could be a design element, but you would run into problems with the ribbing being perpendicular as well.

Ooorrr, you could stop where you are now, place those live 58 stitches on a holder, cut the yarn and start working on those 30 extra stitches you need. Knit to exactly the same spot you left off on with the first 58 (you'll probably want to end both pieces on a right side row), place the 30 new stitches on the same holder or scrap yarn as the 58, mattress stitch the two halves together, and then just place the 58 original stitches on the left hand needle -- followed by the new 30 -- and when you turn your work around voila! You'll be working on all 88 stitches!

Now, as I've been writing this it all seems really complicated, so I would suggest frogging it and starting over with the amount of stitches you need, or frog it and work on it in the round so you don't have to seam sides together. I realize not everyone works with DPNs or circulars for magic loop or otherwise, but a hat is a great place to start! I love ribbing now, it's so easy in the round, and unless your pattern or design calls for it, you never have to purl! Woo! It goes so fast you'll be decreasing before you know it! And if decreasing scares you, just knit a longish tube, and when you're done just draw your yarn through the live stitches to close it up and it ends up having more interest at the top.

I hope that helps and wasn't super confusing, I rarely do projects flat anymore except for shawls and even though frogging sucks it usually ends up being less headache in the end.
