Diego Latorre: "'El Cholo', a very good manager, had been losing to Barca and Madrid for years, but they sell his formula as efficient the day he wins (with one of the most expensive squads in the world). Nobody remembers it when he loses a CL final or against Qarabag"

Them going out of the CL group stages last season is probably their first really big disappointment under him according to the preseason expectations, but even then he kind of made up for it by winning the EL.

I don't feel that you can't use him losing to Barca and Madrid as a slight against him when Atlético used to be light years behind him before he took charge, that they're even competing with them is to his credit. Losing the CL finals isn't a disaster either since they were underdogs (and had been so through some of the knockout games aswell), and both of them were so close that they might aswell have gone home with the trophy. Like, you can't blame Simeone for that last minute Ramos header, or Griezmann's penalty miss.

I think their playstyle is exactly why they're making the waves that they are, it just feels so right for the entire personality of the club to play the way they do, it's that underdog and fighter mentality that has given them that much success in recent years, and it goes hand in hand with the tactics. It's very different from the glamorous playstyle of the other two Spanish giants, but you've gotta respect when a concept comes together as well as it has done for Atlético.
