The differences between Israeli jews and American/Canadian jews

So my mom is from an Israeli family. She was born in Tel Aviv and she and her parents (my maternal grandparents - btw, my grandpa is Ashkenazi (Polish, Ukraine) and my grandma is Sephardic - her family is from Morocco) moved first to NYC and than to Los Angeles when my mom was really young. So my mom really came both worlds; Israel & the US.

  1. My mom speaks Hebrew and me and my sister and brother speak some Hebrew. Since my mom speaks fluent Hebrew we don’t really translate them.
  2. My mom said there was a Israeli community in L.A. in the San Fernando Valley area and my mom and her family were active in the Israeli Community Center.
  3. Nope. All in Hebrew.
  4. My mom intentionally came from an Orthodox family but got less Orthodox when they moved the States - she was raised Conservative. My mom married my dad (who isn’t Jewish - and it’s the first time there’s a interfaith mixed marriage in my maternal family) but despite that me and my siblings were raised as Conservative Jews, we frequently attended shul, had Shabbat dinners, we’re all Bat/Bar Mitzvahs and of course we visit Israel as much as we can (my parents got me and my sister and brother Israeli passports therefore we are Israeli-Americans! :)
  5. Well, at our Conservative synagogue there are all sorts of different kippahs unlike the Reform synagogues, Our rabbi has a velvet kippah whereas my brother and dad wear a knitted one for services or for Shabbat dinners. My brother did attend a Jewish day school when he was younger where kippahs and tzitzit were required and I believer my brother wore a velvet kippah (given by my Israeli grandparents :)
