[DISCUSSION] Artists that became bigger than expected?

What is her intention with Wildest Dreams? I'm genuinely confused by it, and I'm willing to acknowledge that it could be because she was aiming to create exactly the sickening aura I feel whenever I hear the track. Was she trying to create a Twin Peaks-like experience with the 1989 album, where there would be this menacing undercurrent of ugliness and evil behind all the manicured surfaces... like her version of 808s and Heartbreak or Ultraviolence? Am I supposed to see BOB crouching behind the couch when I hear her cooing that chorus, cause I do. And if I'm not supposed to, I will still grant her that it's an interesting piece despite her squeaky clean intentions, and maybe even more interesting for how it evaded those intentions with its secret snakiness. If it's an interesting piece, it's interesting in the sense that I might want to read a think piece connecting it to H. Rap Brown and David Lynch's respective views on cherry pies... not in the sense I can actually stand to listen to it. Wildest Dreams is one of the creepiest songs of all time. There's not a shred of anything romantic.
