Discussion: Indian Society's View on Rape

How do you feel about this series of quotes:

Some of them are extreme, but they have the right idea.

The thing is, India needs to deal with the issue of rape, but they want to do it while preserving their own culture. Indians have every right to reject the west's approach to dealing with rape because they are fearful (and rightly so) that by doing so India will become westernized. It is possible to solve the issue of rape without becoming westernized, and that is the solution they should look for.

Regarding the incident itself, I think Mukesh Singh's comments are correct. If you have to choose between getting gangraped and living or getting gangraped and dying, the first is the logically better option. The problem is that when a girl is getting gangraped, she doesn't logically think "ok well if I just let the rape happen I'll at least probably be able to live." Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember the gang-rapists planning on killing that woman in Delhi; IIRC they were only planning to gangrape her.

Rape is a crime against women. No one is disputing that. It should be addressed. But Indians have every right to reject the west and their views on rape. They don't have to become westernized simply to end rape.

And regarding the conservative views expressed by these men, e.g. women shouldn't stay out late at night, they should dress modestly, if a woman brought shame on her family she would be lit with petrol, I have to agree. American society has become too loose with its morals and has descended into a lifestyle of indulgence and debauchery. There is no rigid societal structure like there was in the 1600s.

So overall, I support pretty much all these images. Victim blaming, is not bad. If you get raped, it probably is partially your fault. Yes, you don't deserve to get raped, but if you dress sluttily in an alley at night, or you step out in an area dominated by men and you're a lone woman, then yes you are elevating your chances to be raped and you need to be cognizant of that.
