This is something I've been wondering about as a non-American. As I understand it, US citizens have the right to form militias and there are - I think I've read that a couple of months ago - more than a thousand right wing militias (this is appearently an inofficial number as it's far greater than the one you've given) and barely any on the left wing ones.

Imagining a societal brakedown of some sort or a proper right wing take over with that sort of situation and it seems very likely that it would be pretty much hunting season on minorities. Maybe that's not too likely, but the coming years will be extremly tense.

It seems very much needed that left wing militias should be formed. And if they make themselves known to the potential victims (maybe only to them) and let them know that they would protect them, this could be a very good thing for socialists in general. After all, if anyone brings this empire down from within (other than incompetend politicians) it will be the oppressed people; Black people, Muslims, Native Americans, Latinos, LGBTQ people.
