[DISCUSSION] You should learn to set up your own guitar

You need to realize that some people have no concept of mechanics, physics, or geometry whatsoever. Learning to setup your guitar is a good idea but you need to understand what everything on the guitar does and how they interact with each other.

Yesterday someone asked where the truss rod is so they can lower the action - I answered that if they don't even know where the truss rod is, maybe doing it yourself isn't the best idea, and suggested they watch some tutorials. I still gave some advice incase he really wanted to give it a try but honestly some people are just not gifted when it comes to visualizing what's going on in a mechanical system. I've tried to show a friend how to adjust his guitar but nothing made sense to him and I would have had to give him a physics/geometry 101 class for him to even begin to understand what's happening.

Setting up guitars takes time, lots of experience and lots of experimenting. It's never like the youtube videos where you set it up to exact specs and boom it plays perfectly, no, each guitar is different and depending on the state of the guitar you'd need to adapt on the fly.

Taking your guitar to a tech for $30 setup is well worth it for a lot of players.
