The word “Zionist” as a term has evolved and changed so much 1948.

There was probably a time in history where your take was correct because Zionism as a word simply meant self-determination and fulfilment of rights for the Jewish diaspora .

However today, particularly from the Cold War onwards with the decline of Mapai, I think the word for better or worse has slowly evolved into a more specific ideology and since the 1970’s/80’s has taken a broad right-wing turn. Like all ideologies that will bring valid criticisms and people who outright disagree with it.

When people as different as Ben-Gurion and Naftali Bennett both self-describe as Zionist it’s probably likely the word has changed a lot and can be tricky to pin-down. That leads to a lot of arguments over it and unfortunately also bad faith actors taking advantage of the confusion.
