Speaking of stacks of papers,

I read papers in literature, philosophy, and archaeology when I'm tired of doing my work.

My work involves reading piles of papers in mathematics, statistics, computer science, and economics. I enjoy the work. But when I grow weary of matrix calculus, I curl up with academic journals in philosophy or archaeology. They stretch different parts of my brain.

Sometimes, I even dip my toe into academic journals on chemistry and biology. I have a longstanding layman's interest in chemical evolution, microbiology, and cellular biology. But these are precise, technical disciplines, so reading their papers is like a splash of cold water on the face. Refreshing.
