[DISCUSSION] What are your thoughts on the current webnovel scene?

One thing that I distances me from reading more western novels, especially fantasy, is that there are almost no villainous/self-serving protagonists. We are always following some good guy on a quest, either trying get rid of great evil or having some other altruistic motive.

When I first started reading chinese webnovels, it was a breath of fresh air. Even though "you looked at me wrong and I'm gonna kill your entire family" got a bit old now, I was fascinated in how our protagonist can casually commit genocide and clan extermination, and seeing the extent their cruelty goes in order to achieve their objectives.

I couldn't find a western alternative to cruel and cunning, or at least self serving protagonists we always see in chinese novels. Sure there are some good books like "Prince of Nothing" or "Broken Empire" series, but they number pitifully few compared to their chinese counterparts.
