[Discussion] What happens if you can't afford an emergency surgery that could save your dog's life?

So I have a friend who is a vet, & she works in a an emergency clinic. Around two months ago, a woman came in with a dog who had been attacked by another dog while she was taking him for a walk, & he needed surgery & some other kind of treatment (I didn’t get details because I’m squeamish). Anyway, the cost of it all was a few hundred euro. The phone number the woman left them with was not her real number, and she never came back to collect her dog. She couldn’t afford to pay the bill. The dog is being cared for anyway, he had the surgery, he’s living with one of my friend’s colleagues now and he’ll be fine. Still, I thought the whole thing was so sad.
