Disney won.

This is depressing.

There’s absolutely nothing we can do to defeat Disney. They make billions to ruin what we loved about original content with soulless rehashes that people will flock to blindly. Want a new, compelling story? Nope, here’s the movie from 30 years ago, now with diversity and flashy CGI! Not that there’s something wrong with that, but it’s becoming apparent that this is the focus going forward.

I’m always hesitant to speak out about Star Wars. My family treats it as their second religion, talking bad about the new movies is blasphemous. Twitter will declare you a white misogynist if you don’t ship what’s popular. Movie opinions have been officially politicized in 2020, and your vote doesn’t matter.

I can think of two possible futures for the franchise.

Best case scenario, Disney sells Star Wars. Now what? Carrie Fisher is dead, so no more Leia stories without it “not feeling the same.” There will be controversy behind decannonizing the DT, it might affect ticket sales drastically. Star Wars fatigue is becoming a reality, so most people who watched the other movies wouldn’t even bother watching the new stories anyway. The Disney fanatics who watched everything from Solo, to Ralph Breaks the Internet won’t be interested in these new projects. Star Wars dies out.

Worst case scenario? Disney hangs onto Star Wars. Content continues to be consumed, so the most logical thing to do is to continue churning out content on Disney+ and Hollywood films. The DT stays canon, but neither John Boyega or Daisy Ridley are interested in doing Star Wars again. Carrie Fisher is still dead, and they won’t be doing CGI Leia. Kathleen Kennedy steps down and is replaced by someone who realizes there was source material. They attempt to adapt all the books to please the fans, but the canon is effed even further. This continues for 90 years. Star Wars lives, But is about as alive as a cancer patient on life support.

In retrospect, both of these scenarios aren’t so great, but I don’t see SW thriving long term. It’s almost enough for me to throw myself off a bridge, seeing what damage Disney did to George.

It would be great if someone can come up with a more optimistic scenario for this franchise.
