Is DIY mixing better for the tiny genres?

Honestly, I think yes. I signed with a producer last year and worked in a studio with some obscenely huge mixing board from lion king and thousand dollar microphones and analog stuff and I had to pull the plug on the whole project, because he just couldn't tell what I wanted in terms of an indie sound. The stuff I make now with just a focus rite interface and at4040, I love so much more.

The REAL reason my music is better now is because I don't have to face the time crunch of the studio, and I can spend time making sound exactly how I want, purposely adding too much reverb or having it clip out too much. I think a mix having CHARACTER for most genres is wayyyy more important than being unoffensive and perfect. Thats just my take.

And nowadays, all sorts of barriers have been removed from the music business and I think that it's good that there is no expectation for people to spend thousands on studio fees to make good music.
