That's the thing - we didn't have the resources after the war to build houses with individually cabled spurs, so we have ring mains with slightly larger grade cable instead.

Modern houses will have one ring main per area - one for the living room, one for the kitchen, and one or two for the upstairs areas depending on how many sockets there are in the bedrooms. A lot of houses don't have any more rooms than that, so we'd only really have 2-4 ring mains per house (depending on age), plus individual connections for high power devices - these tend to be the cooker (which gets it's own 30A main if it's electric), the immersion water heater (16A on it's own iirc) and the electric shower if present (again 16A iirc).

Fridges here do not get their own individual supply as they tend to be smaller under counter models or single width full height fridge freezers.
