DMG quote of the week for me

If theyre beasts, giant spiders could be handled with animal handling or stealth. Goblins who wanna kill you? Intimidation, or persuasion, dc 20 or so. I did a quick (though not exhaustive by any means) look through a PDF of compiled dcs from modules, and many of the charisma checks for hostiles (who probably didn't decide to kill you, to be fair) to get them to do something was around 15. If you've got an average stat of say 14 in charisma (lowball for a face) and have expertise (if you use feats, as early as level 1 for variant humans, or whatever level rogues and bards get it), so a modifier of +6 at first level. So, a dc of 15 is successful more than half the time, and a dc of 20 about 35% of the time. Which isn't great, but not impossible. (dc 20 is the value for a hard check via 5e SRD I found online, which I believe but am not certain can be found in the DMG)
