Doctor Who 9x01: The Magician's Apprentice Post-Episode Discussion Thread

Here are my thoughts on the episode, I was disappointed to be honest.

First of all, Moffat has made zero thought about anyone who wants to get into Doctor Who at the start of a new series. What did we have? Davros, The Master, Daleks, recordings of the Doctor’s previous generations... If you just started watching Doctor Who now, you’d have no idea what’s going on. I’d let this go if this was a Finale, but putting this in at the start of a new series? I understand it’s ingrained in the pop culture, but not to this detail.

Missy’s intentions didn’t make any sense, Why did she feel the need to stop the planes? Also, “here is the Doctor’s confession”. Why did the Doctor give it to the Master? Never explained, probably never going to be explained given it was destroyed. Neither will her coming back be explained when they inevitably roll out the master again. (Although the Master has died so many times in the old series and come back without explanation that it doesn’t really make a difference)

I have many other questions about this episode. Why was the anachronism detected so easily? Why were they Daleks in disguise if Davros sent someone to him anyway? How did he get the tank there? Why did Missy do that weird psychic projection thing once and it’s just completely ignored? Why did the building not fade with the rest of the planet? How did the Doctor go back there if his Tardis was destroyed?

Davros never pointed out in any previous episodes that the Doctor saved him, I’m not sure why he felt the need to point it out now. Also, how old is that screwdriver at this point? Why did Davros feel the need to keep it with him all his life? I mean, the Doctor knows what he did, why take the screwdriver with you?

Also, what’s with Moffat and giving characters seriously anti-climactic deaths? Missy just outright killed several characters last season, two guards die now for no reason, Clara dies, Missy dies again. It takes less than a few minutes for the Doctor to get over it, may be Moffat just has the attitude generally and he’s projecting. I mean, the people of Earth didn’t care much when the planes stopped, they did when it was happening with the typical mock up news channel affair but after they come back there’s a brief hurrah and it’s business as usual, as if massive paranormal activity is now an expected daily occurrence and at this point just a mild inconvenience.

I did like the Doctor playing electric guitar, sorry if I appear a little negative about this.
