Does anyone *use* 32 GB RAM?

Not just RAM; I hardly even use multiple CPU cores. When your local machine is basically just a dumb terminal and all your heavy lifting is on a remote workstation, most of the programs you use are only single-threaded anyway, so I'd rather have a $200 midrange gaming CPU with fast single-thread performance than a pair of $1000 server monsters with 10 cores each.

My critical specs for the computer I actually work on are, in order of decreasing importance:

  1. monitor size (I like a single big one instead of two medium, YMMV)
  2. fastest reasonably possible network connection (but I won't pay extra at home)
  3. NVMe SSD with enough space for OS and programs
  4. larger-than-normal-but-not-outrageous amount of HDD space for data I want to poke locally
  5. a little more RAM than usual
  6. single-thread CPU speed
  7. ...
  8. ...
  9. multi-thread CPU throughput
