Similes aren't factual lies nor are they used to imply exaggeration, they are figures of speech that serve to compare opposites.

So no simile can ever be a factual lie or used for exaggeration? What are the common reasons people compare opposites? It couldn't be a good way to exaggerate or say something that's literally untrue for effect, could it? You get that simile can be used as hyperbole, and that's exactly what the person you were "correcting" was doing, right? Which makes the fact it's a simile totally unimportant to this discussion.

I'm not arguing the meaning of the word. It only has one basic meaning. I'm arguing how the word is commonly used. The use of "literally" as hyperbole isn't a "secondary definition", it's... just how hyperbole works. Using the word ironically, as it were.

Re: Attempting to correct you - I didn't attempt, I succeeded, whether you realize it or not. You made a silly complaint. I explained how it's silly and you said a few things that aren't quite accurate. This is factual and anyone reading the above with a high-school level grasp of English knows it. But apparently you're not very good at discerning exaggeration for effect, so let me apologize. Sorry. I don't think you're a Nazi, of grammar or otherwise. I was practicing my rhetorical skills. Though "grammar nazi" is, in the grand scheme, a relatively minor complaint to make about a person. Hell, I don't even hate grammar nazis, I just think that anyone engaging in that pastime should be good at it.
