Why does everyone think student loans should be forgiven?

Not everyone had a choice. I wanted to go to city college but my parents insisted I go to the more reputable, and very expensive, university I got into. My family wasn’t the kind where I had ANY decision making capability EVER. The best education possible was the ticket to a better life and my parents were desperate for that for me and my sister.

We did it on a shoestring, I commuted and worked all the way through, around my classes. This was the 90s and I had subsequent schooling. I never made enough until 2019 to be able to pay them. I might have had a chance if interest were not so high over the years. Trust me, I would rather just be able to pay my bills but due to interest the total is so high now, it’s more than double my yearly income. It’s why I don’t own a home or a car. If they’re forgiven in 7 years (I work in civil service and am in income based repayment) I might be able to get a car.
