Does it pick up and when?

I started watching the series and I am currently on episode 10.

The characters are established to be 14 year old children, and them seem to sexualize them... a lot. The episode after Asuka is introduced opens with a panty shot on her with a VO talking about how attractive she is.

Does the sexualization of minors die down as the series goes on? I'm going to be honest after seeing that episode opening I browsed some NGE subreddits and saw the fan art that also sexualized Rei / Asuka and the whole thing made me feel uncomfortable / gross. Am I crazy in feeling this? This is one of the most recommended anime, but the sexualizing children from the show and by extension fan subs is turning me off.
