Why does it seem that D&D is uniquely criticized for having racial ability bonuses when many fantasy video games also have them?

PCs are already exceptional by all the abilities they get from leveling up their class and the different paths they can choose. Personally I think the racial modifiers make my character unique and pose an interesting challenge depending on the race-class combo that I choose, they also provide hooks for the character's back story and motivations in some cases.

Speaking in general I think this trend of making everyone equal leaking into D&D is only making the game less diverse. I know not everyone agrees with me but I see it happening with already existing characters in new books like Van Richten's where Wizards just gender swaps the character or makes everyone into a goody two-shoes and calls that diversity, not realizing they're just destroying diversity by turning everyone into the same template.
