Does shooting percentage matter? Stamkos vs Ovechkin

Well I think Ovi is around 0.68g per game before he had his 3 ~30 goal seasons which is 5 seasons and 396 games if I counted correctly. Since Ovi was older when he entered the league I thought it would be fun to see the stats of Stamkos 5 seasons after his first year in the league.

Ovechkin first 5 seasons:

396gp, 269g, 0.679 goals per game.

Stamkos 5 seasons after his 1st:

331gp, 210g, 0.634 goals per game.

They are a bit closer in ES scoring, and for fun if we remove empty net goals they are even closer.

Obviously Ovechkin is the better goal scorer, but I would argue that Stamkos was the more gifted goal scorer. The thing that sets Ovi apart is his elite ability to get the chances to score goals paired with elite goal scoring.

I think they were much closer than some people realize before Stamkos hurt his leg and after that lost St Louis.

Another fun thing when looking at where they were at the same ages, the 3 seasons since after the leg & st louis departure Stamkos was 25-27 years old and when Ovi was that age he had his ~30g seasons

Stamkos age 25-27: 176gp, 88g - 0.5g/gp

Ovechkin age 25-27: 205gp, 102g - 0.497g/gp

I'm still not trying to say that Ovechkin isn't the better goal scorer, I just think it's fun to look at it from different perspectives.

It's a shame with Stamkos injuries but who knows maybe he will surprise people in the coming years.
