Does where you raise your kid matter?

I grew up in a majority white, anti-religion, “liberal” area and my family is mixed race and religious (but politically liberal). It was a very valuable experience for me.

Being in the minority can create strong skills and a real solid sense of identity, as well as respect for others. The least tolerant people I’ve ever met have been those who never had their viewpoints challenged and who never tried to get along with people who are unlike them, whether that’s racially, politically, culturally or religiously.

I say go for it. Your son will make new friends and have lots of new experiences. He may have his views challenged, but that is a good thing, not something to avoid.
