Domestication. Why Dogs?

Most of the examples you gave either have no use for humans, or cause more problems then they are worth. What do you for example do with a giraffe? Ride it? No. Use it for transporting/draging stuff? No. Recycling kitchen waste? No. Milk? No. Fur? Maybe. Meat? Ok, yes maybe, but then you need to think about how you control them. They don't live in herds and a simple fence will be not enough to keep them from running away and you then end up basically hunting wild animals again.

You can also remove all carnivores from the list of potential candidates for domestication. The cat is the only example of a domesticated carnivore and it only did happen because we never needed to feed them directly. Wolves and especially dogs are omnivores, not carnivores, they can eat most of the stuff we eat if they need to. This is important because you don't need to provide a extra food source especially for them. The most significant genetic differences between dogs and wolves even have to do with the better digestion of starch.
