Donald Trump wants 35 per cent US import levy

Trump is a maroon, and his 35% policy is bizarre, to say the least... Regardless, it's the whole "depend on low-cost Chinese goods" that's really the heart of the issue, isn't it? Why depend? It's not an option anymore, we DEPEND on it. We have less buying power than generations previous, and we are simply stuck with cheap crap now, and everything is throwaway quality. Companies like Mattel, who make cheap plastic shit were very profitable pumping out GI Joes in the 80's from American factories while employing American workers. Like Mattel, Ford is not moving production to pass the savings onto customers, they are doing it to improve their bottom line. If Ford and Mattel only made $10B with American workers instead of $12B with foreign labour, is that really the end of the world? Well, yes, they are not going to just roll over and lose money to help their fellow countrymen, I get that. This 35% is short-sited and woefully thought out (Trump in a nutshell), but the spirit of this idea is something to look into, IMHO. I believe the entire cheap throwaway culture we have now is part of the problem, and we should not have to choose between cheap garbage or decent products because that's all we can afford. Again, that money "saved" overseas does nothing for us as a whole, it just makes the rich richer. I dunno, Bernie could explain it better.
