They don't identify as Concentration camps.

Some asshole deleted his comment, but I'm going to post my response here in any case bc this shit is not a joke and we NEED to talk about it.

Here's what get's me about talking points like these and commentators like you: they are completely without context---I'm not sure you in particular are being intentionally obtuse in ignoring the context, or are actually historically illiterate, so I'm just going to address these bullshit talking points as if you were in earnest.

To what extent are we responsible for the well being of Honduras and El Salvadoran refugees?

TO a great extent as WE have directly acted in ways that have destabilized these countries and in part led to the need for these people to flee. The general ignorance of this truth drives me up the wall.

  1. Here are some sources specific to our history in Honduras if you're interested, which I genuinely doubt you are.

  2. Here's some more about our history in El Salvador.

So you don't know about that history. FINE. Fucking educate yourself. Once you understand the history, also understand that to THEN claim that we have no responsibility for the people we destabilize is IMMORAL.

Why are the parents of these children abandoning their children?

Imagine just for a moment that this person is a human being like yourself. Imagine just for a moment you had no choice concerning where you were born. Imagine just for a fucking second that this place happens to be no place to create a fulfilled life---worse, no place to see you children aspire to such. LARGELY DUE TO THE INTERVENTION OF POWERS BEYOND YOUR CONTROL. Imagine being brave enough to journey to another land at great risk to yourself to provide life, liberty and pursuit of happiness for your children. They're not abandoning their children, their children are being taken from them.

TO ASK WHY THEY WOULD RISK THE JOURNEY IS TO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW BRAVE THESE PEOPLE ARE. To frame that risk as an act of deliberately abandoning one's child is so incredibly privileged and so incredibly callous.

My GOD.

When people ask, years and years after great atrocity, HOW could it have happened---how could we have let it happen.

This is how. This is how. THIS IS HOW.
